DPF-PHENO 2024 Public Lecture: How did we come to be? That's a physics question!

Abstract: Particle physicists in the U.S. have gone through a three-year exercise to discuss the future of the field. We have come up with an exciting plan that is meant to address the question "How did we come to be?" In this public lecture, I will discuss essential parts of this question: dark matter, Higgs boson, neutrinos, inflation.

Presenter Bio: Hitoshi Murayama is a well-known theoretical particle physicist who works broadly, even on cosmology and condensed matter physics. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo in 1991 and has been a professor at the University of California, Berkeley.

Global Accessibility Awareness Day

Thursday, May 16, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., various locations, CUC

On this Global Accessibility Awareness Day, CMU students, faculty and staff will join other organizations around the world in learning about digital access and inclusion for people with disabilities. A keynote seminar from Blind tech educator Chancey Fleet will be held at 9 a.m. in McConomy Auditorium, followed by conference-style programming.

CALICO Conference 2024

Against the ever-evolving landscape of technology-enhanced language learning (TELL), the Computer Assisted Language Instruction Consortium (CALICO) Conference aims to explore the latest advancements, innovations and best practices in computer-assisted language learning (CALL). The latest advancements in Artificial Intelligence, augmented reality, virtual reality and extended reality, as well as playful approaches to language learning, have been transformative forces in language education, making the TELL field more engaging and effective than ever before. This year's theme is Confluences and Connections: Bridging Industry and Academia in CALL.

CALICO 2024 plenary speakers are Frederik Cornillie, KU Leuven and imec, and Luis von Ahn, Duolingo.

This year's conference is hosted by the Department of Languages, Cultures & Applied Linguistics (LCAL) at Carnegie Mellon University and co-sponsored by LCAL and the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

"The Four Shakespeare Folios, 1623–2023: Copy, Print, Paper, Type" Book Launch

Thursday, May 30, 4:30 to 7 p.m., Posner Center

A continuation of the year-long celebration of the 400th anniversary of the publication of Shakespeare’s First Folio, this in-person event will coincide with the publication of “The Four Shakespeare Folios, 1623–2023: Copy, Print, Paper, Type,” edited by Sam Lemley, curator of special collections. Featuring a panel of several of the book's contributors, this event will offer another in-depth look at Shakespeare’s work and contributions to society at large. A moderated Q&A will follow the presentations with a light reception afterwards. One copy of Shakespeare’s First Folio will also be on display during the event.

The CMU Pantry is a free resource that combats food insecurity by providing food assistance to Carnegie Mellon University students and their dependents. All current CMU students are eligible to shop at the Pantry. Shoppers are asked to reserve times for their visits to prevent overcrowding.
